The Browns also lost Jadeveon Clowney, who was ruled out with a head injury at the end of the first half. Rookie Alex Wright had to play a ton of snaps in his place, occasionally replaced by Chase Winovich to give him a breather. That drive took 12 plays and went 91 yards which included a fourth down conversion and required a facemask to even get started. After a Zane Gonzalez field goal brought the Browns within 14–10 early in the third quarter, the Steelers drove down the field again. Roethlisberger threw a second touchdown pass to James to put them up by 11, 21–10. The drive was boosted by a 41-yard pass interference penalty on Browns cornerback Jamar Taylor on a deep pass intended for Brown.

For Chubb, he's adapting to not only taking the ball in more shotgun looks, but some of the read concepts the Browns are employing. The mesh alone takes time to work on, so adding that into some of their run concepts or throwing out of them can be tricky at first. It was important for the Browns to pick up a 4th-and-1 play where Watson was under center and the Browns ran power with Chubb to pick up the first down before scoring the game's only touchdown. Watson has operated almost exclusively out of the shotgun dating back to his days at Clemson.
The Browns have faced the Jets in each of the past two seasons and the Titans in each of the past three. In 2020, Hunt had a combined 105 rushing yards on 19 carries, 10 receptions for 86 yards and a pair of touchdowns in two games against the Ravens. The Vikings took the lead when Case Keenum found Adam Thielen on an 18-yard pass to make it 9–3. DeShone Kizer ran for a 1-yard touchdown to put the Browns back in the lead 13–9. Though, the Vikes soon followed when Forbath kicked a 34-yard field goal to make it 13–12 at halftime. In the third quarter, the Vikes retook the lead after Forbath kicked a 43-yard field goal to make it 15–13. Zane Gonzalez then put up a 23-yard field goal to make it 16–15 in favor of the Browns retaking the lead.
The Browns also finalized dates and times on their preseason schedule, which includes a nationally televised, Monday-night game against the New York Giants. With Christmas falling on a Sunday, almost the entire schedule is being played on Saturday the 24th, Christmas Eve. The Saturday night game between the Raiders and Steelers will be the only contest available on NFL Network. Starting in Week 15, there will be football games to watch the next two Saturdays, as fans get an early Christmas gift from the league. Some of this may amount to getting live reps with Chubb and Deshaun Watson on the field at the same time.
On January 13, the Browns hired DeWayne Walker as defensive backs coach. A day later, they hired Blake Williams as linebackers coach, Jerod Kruse as assistant defensive backs coach, and Bob Wylie as offensive line coach. Because the Rams went 11–5, their first winning season in 14 years when they were based in St. Louis, the Browns were the only team from 2008 to this year that didn't have a single winning season.
In the first half, Deshaun Watson is 13-of-18 passing for 108 yards. Cleveland had to kick a redzone field goal late in the second quarter after a pass fell incomplete to David Njoku in the corner of the end zone. On 3rd-and-goal from the three, the Browns lined up Donovan Peoples-Jones in the backfield. When Watson dropped back to pass, DPJ started working outside then came back in where Watson found him and DPJ was able to run in uncontested for the touchdown, his second receiving touchdown of the season.
It didn't last long, and the Vikings retook the lead later in the quarter when Jerick McKinnon ran for a 1-yard touchdown to make it 23–16. In the fourth quarter, the Vikes sealed the game when Keenum found Kyle Rudolph on a 4-yard pass to make it 30–16. Then Forbath kicked a 51-yard field goal to make the final score 33–16. The Browns then traveled further west to take on the Chargers, the only team the Browns beat the previous season. After a scoreless first quarter, Travis Coons kicked two field goals for the Chargers, from 21 and 40 yards, for a 6–0 lead.
