This will certainly be a new favourite of mine during the holiday season. Baltasar Kormákur’s bombastic directorial debut is an Icelandic comedy as black as Nordic winter nights. Some might quibble with calling this a Christmas film, but all the action does take place over the holidays, so it makes the list. Unfortunately, it is not enough to merely to try to be different or add a new spin on conventional films, whether they are horror films or dark comedies. Here, Santa is a reclusive, slightly misanthropic, artisan toy maker (voiced in English by J.K. Simmons) who gets tricked into becoming the big guy bringing joy to the world’s children.
It truly is a comic book potboiler in the vein of "Tales From the Crypt," crude tongue wedged in its cheek, nonsensical plot devices on full display. I understand fully why so many wags here hated it, but despite its flaws, I had fun with its earnest attempt to offer up its twisted take on teen angst. In Just King Things, two academics go book by book through Stephen King’s work, in publication order. Their backgrounds make them very good at explaining what works in the books, and also unafraid to really get into what doesn’t work. What sold me on this show was both their ability to name what so completely draws us to King’s work, but also their courage to point out where King falls into racist or misogynist or just plain bad writing in even his most beloved works. It does not come across as academic, it’s a very easy and funny listen. If you are a fan of King or grew up reading him, it might have you looking at familiar books in a new way.
